This client gave us the mandate to create an intimate terrace. She wanted to create a covered dining area as well as a space for the spa. In order to allow guests from all areas to communicate with each other easily, the spa had to be nearby. So we developed a multi-level patio. It includes a landing at the exit of the house to have the barbecue near the kitchen and a landing a little lower for the outdoor dining room and the spa. This landing is much more intimate since it is closer to the ground, therefore less in view of neighbors. The modern western red cedar pergola houses the dining area. We chose to dye it Sansin Onyx Black. It extends to the spa, creating a whole. We have added a retractable canvas to allow occupants to protect themselves from the sun if they wish.
We also added a custom-made composite bench seat and a screen. Its design is unique with its wooden structure which incorporates a perforated black aluminum panel. We have wisely chosen the pattern to recall the shape of the pergola. This arrangement is directly integrated into it and is located on the side where the neighbors are closest in order to increase the privacy of the premises. This area is large enough to easily accommodate 6 to 8 people to eat. The spa is at ground level next door. Communication between the two zones is therefore easy. We ensured the privacy of the spa by a curtain attached to the extension of the pergola which frames it.
We chose to build the Trex composite deck in Havana Gold color from the Transcend Tropical range so that it would be maintenance-free, but without compromising on the warm look of the wood. A Standard black railing from Aluminum Distinction ensures the safety of the upper patio and matches perfectly with the pergola and the black stained cedar skirt. All these elements contribute to giving a very contemporary and current look to the layout.
