This client's yard was already well advanced with its multi-level stamped concrete patio. Our mandate was to draw up a design plan with the aim of integrating ramps and guardrails into its existing layout in addition to a beautiful custom-made pergola structure for its main landing. The design of the modern wooden pergola that we imagined was done in two stages.
First of all, we wanted to combine the dining section and the lounge section under the same structure, while visually demarcating the areas. A Western red cedar timberframe with 6''x6'' and 8''x8'' columns and beams, 6''x6'' braces and 2''x6'' crosspieces traditionally assembled by tenons. mortises form the pergola. A mix of Espresso and Black Onyx colors from Sansin sets the tone for the structure.
In the lounge section, we added a retractable sail. It can provide a completely shaded area to occupants when they wish. An Espresso-stained cedar wall matches the crosspieces of the pergola to create the ambiance of this section. In the dining section, we hung a light fixture in the center of the cross pattern created by the beams. Black galvanized steel cutouts with abstract, openwork patterns form the back wall. This entire area is Black Onyx, which sets it apart from its neighbor.
Finally, for the upper landing, we opted for Murano railings in black aluminum and Aluminum Distinction glass. Behind the barbecue, there is rather a small screen which ensures security. It is made of Espresso-stained Western red cedar and mounted on black aluminum posts. This element creates a visual reminder of the pergola in addition to delimiting the area. The steps between the two landings are also in Espresso-stained cedar to unify everything.
