This client gave us a custom design mandate to create a hybrid outdoor space. First, it had to have a modern look and be constructed of cedar and paving stones. She wanted a patio with corner steps leading down to provide easy access to all sides of her yard. In addition, she also wanted a large paved area. The goal was to incorporate a cedar pergola where she could create a dining area and a lounge space.
We therefore designed a patio for her with corner steps leading to a paved area raised one step above the ground. On top of this, we designed a custom cedar pergola with two sections. It's a Western red cedar timberframe, assembled using traditional mortise and tenon joints. Anchoring to the paving stones will be ensured by special plates. The dining section is covered by a retractable shade sail to protect the occupants from the sun, while the other section is overhung with cedar beams.
Finally, the layout is intimate thanks to Western red cedar screens. These screens, from Sansin's Espresso range, are mounted on black aluminum posts. This wall is embellished with a galvanized steel cutout featuring an openwork geometric pattern. Furthermore, the continuation of this wall into a low wall allows us to integrate the barbecue area adjacent to the structure. This configuration thus allows for the optimal and functional arrangement of all sections, much to the client's delight.
