Why build a patio or terrace on screw piles?
Why build a patio or terrace on screw piles?
Simply because deck blocks are not adequate foundations for our climate. In winter when the ground freezes it expands, which lifts the deck blocks. Since your patio is attached to your house, it is the structure of the patio that weakens each year due to repetitive ground movements. Piles are quick to install, practical and robust while sonotubes require more work.

Why don't you build a treated wood patio?
Why don't you build a treated wood patio?
Mainly because treated wood does not meet our quality and durability standards. Following prolonged exposure to the sun and bad weather, treated wood cracks and often tends to twist. Treated wood must be constantly maintained to maintain its fungal resistance. PurPatio suggests red cedar instead of treated wood.

Why is my patio built 4 inches lower than my door threshold?
Why is my patio built 4 inches lower than my door threshold?
The 4" setback is necessary to prevent water infiltration, which occurs mainly when the snow melts. This standard is often overlooked by unscrupulous patio builders, leading to disastrous consequences that you will only notice several years after the work is completed.

Why shouldn't my patio skirt touch the ground?
Why shouldn't my patio skirt touch the ground?
When winter comes, the water contained in the ground freezes and expands. This vertical movement of the ground would push on the skirt of your patio and deform it. We usually keep a minimum of 3 inches between the ground and the finish of your cedar patio. In addition to protecting against frost damage, this space allows for better air circulation under your patio.

How soon should I stain my cedar deck?
Typically, you can stain your cedar deck 2 to 3 weeks after construction is complete. You should let the wood dry until its moisture content drops to about 10%. The less time you wait to do this, the easier it will be to prepare the surface.

Is composite or PVC warmer than wood?
Is composite or PVC warmer than wood?
A composite floor will always be warmer than wood , since the thermo-conductivity of the plastic (contained in the shell that covers the composite boards) is greater than that of wood, so it is a better conductor of heat.
A PVC floor will get cooler than a composite floor of equivalent color. Since the density of the material is lower, it retains less heat. For more details on this topic, see the blog post Is Composite Warmer Than Wood?
