The owners of this cottage commissioned us to design a timber-framed sunroom made of Western Red Cedar to enjoy the outdoors and their beautiful lake view. They wanted shelter from the sun, rain, and mosquitoes. We were also to include a maintenance-free composite deck. Finally, they wanted a watertight storage area under the deck, at ground level.
We therefore developed a concept that would extend their home to the side. The sunroom would be accessible from the front of the house and from inside. This allows them to maintain a completely unobstructed view of the lake from inside the cottage. We designed the sunroom to have cedar paneling on the lower section, which would also serve as railings. The upper walls and the side facing the lake are screened. We installed a standard door as well as a retractable door, allowing us to fully enjoy the surrounding nature. The timber frame, as well as the paneling on the half walls and ceiling, are stained in Sansin's espresso color. The roof of the structure is made of asphalt shingles, matching that of the house.
We chose Trex composite decking from the Transcend Tropical line, in Spiced Rum. It creates a contrast that harmonizes well with the veranda. The standard aluminum railings are also brown. We incorporated storage beneath a section of the patio, lined with a waterproof membrane. It's enclosed by a sliding door on one side, keeping the space clear. We left an open area next to the storage, facing the lake, to create a relaxation zone. All these details make it an ideal spot to comfortably enjoy the outdoors, nature, and the lake.
