The intimate patio concept we developed for this client was designed to incorporate several zones on different levels. She requested a backyard with a mixed layout. We created a blend of patios and paving stones that would provide her with ample privacy from her neighbors. Furthermore, the client had just purchased a large gazebo that we needed to integrate into the new design. We therefore built a first level at the patio door. We positioned the barbecue there for easy access from the kitchen for meal preparation. To create privacy on the side, we installed a wooden screen.

We stained it in Sansin's Barn Wood color. We built it to a height of 6 feet. It's installed directly on the railings with aluminum posts. However, to avoid obstructing the view of the yard, we used white Murano glass railings from Aluminium Distinction. They blend well with the style of the house and the Trex composite decking. We chose to paint it Island Mist from the Transcend Tropical line, which is maintenance-free. We built the last step of this corner patio, allowing the homeowner to place her garden planters on it. We also added this detail to provide better access to the paved area.

We positioned the pool patio on the opposite side of the yard, and it also features a screen to limit the view from the side neighbors. We constructed this privacy wall with alternating sections of wood with hooks for drying towels or hanging pool accessories, and sections of artificial greenery to add texture. All the materials we used for this patio are identical to those on the other to create a unified design.

The paved terrace occupies a large portion of the central area. We designed it to be spacious enough to accommodate the lounge area with a fireplace and the gazebo. We've also set up a relaxation and dining area for 6 to 8 people. Because these sections are at ground level, they are naturally very private. We've positioned them between the patios, so the screens provide privacy for those inside.

Given its central location, we opted for composite skirting on both patios to create a clean, finished look. We also took the opportunity to build a watertight storage area beneath the pool area. The side facing the east fence was left completely open and easily accessible. A great way to combine practicality and aesthetics without compromising the overall aesthetic.
