The complete design of this outdoor space is perfect for enjoying a Gaspé summer. First, there's a large ipe wood patio with a very contemporary pergola. We designed it to seamlessly connect the front and back of the house. In addition, we needed to create a terrace for entertaining in complete privacy and sheltered from the strong winds coming off the sea.

The staircase, which leads from the front of the house and allows occupants to enter from the side, is wide. Flower boxes with integrated glass and aluminum railings frame it on both sides. It connects the front and back of the house via a corridor that runs the length of the building. The large terrace is made of ipe wood. This material will withstand the test of time and the salty air, requiring only oiling. In addition, a large timber-frame pergola made of Western red cedar frames the space. It is finished with a two-tone stain, Espresso and Onyx Black by Sansin. We also added retractable shade sails to the structure to provide shade for the occupants if desired.

Next, the sides enclosed by privacy walls are clad in stained cedar paneling. The barbecue area with its privacy wall is located to the right of the patio door. At the homeowner's request, we created a wall with horizontal bars to allow vines to climb over time. To the left of the patio door, the privacy wall features an alcove with a backlit, perforated aluminum cutout. This detail adds ambiance to the relaxation area. To maintain the view, black aluminum and glass railings in the Murano model enclose the side facing the back of the yard. We built a staircase leading to the yard where the paved area with the fire pit is located.

Finally, a cedar skirt, also stained Onyx Black, closes off the underside of the patio. We built two separate storage areas, one at the back near the steps and the other behind the front staircase. Lastly, to unify the project, we designed a contemporary-style wall on the house. It is made of horizontal wooden slats, and the structure frames both the patio door and the side door to create a cohesive look.
