Design description

The design of this Trex patio with a veranda was created by combining several areas requested by the client. First, she wanted a veranda off her front door where she could eat sheltered and free from mosquitoes. She also wanted a barbecue area and a space for lunch and coffee in the sun. Finally, access to the hot tub from the patio and storage space beneath it had to be included.

Given the multiple areas to be landscaped and the floor space we needed, we opted for composite decking. This material is durable and maintenance-free, in addition to having the look of wood. We chose the Beach Dune color from Trex's Enhance line. We also built the skirting under the patio using composite decking and integrated two separate storage units. One is near the shed for easy access, and the other is near the hot tub, ideal for storing cushions. We added Trex lights to the risers to enhance the look and create a pleasant ambiance.

The sunroom is directly off the house. It's large enough to accommodate a table that comfortably seats eight people. Gray Canexel siding with composite handrails matching the flooring encloses the exterior sides of the sunroom. We clad the columns and beams with white Trex siding. Asphalt shingles cover the roof, the same color as the house. The interior ceiling is paneled in espresso-stained cedar to coordinate with the composite siding. The side facing the backyard is fully open, with a standard door and retractable screened doors.

Next, just outside the veranda, we've created a barbecue area that flows seamlessly from it. The veranda's half-walls extend behind it, incorporating a composite countertop and a cabinet. We've added a small pergola with a corrugated galvanized steel roof for shelter in case of rain. We've taken advantage of a small, irregular corner of the landing, near the house, to create a reading nook.

A few steps down, we created the space that will serve as access to the spa and for sunny lunches. It's a large landing, open to the courtyard and the pool, which receives no shade from the surrounding trees. The height is perfect for easy access to the spa. The numerous, unobstructed circulation areas on all sides of the courtyard are ideal. For safety, but also for aesthetic reasons, we opted for white Murano-style railings in aluminum and glass to close off the side closest to the house.
